CoughRx-DMX™ Inventor Credits Childhood Cold for Inspiring Innovative Formula
NEW YORK, NY (May 17, 2024) – DextroMed Pharma today launched CoughRx-DMX™, the first-of-its-kind cough suppressant toothpaste, a product lauded as a potential game-changer in over-the-counter cough relief. Behind this innovative product is lead scientist Dr. Alistair Humphrey, who revealed that his own enduring childhood cold was the unlikely catalyst for the breakthrough formula.

“I vividly remember being perpetually plagued by a relentless cough as a child,” Dr. Humphrey shared in an exclusive interview. “It wasn’t just the discomfort; it was the disruption to my sleep, my studies, and even my ability to simply enjoy life. I was always searching for effective relief, and that desire stayed with me.”
The revolutionary CoughRx-DMX™ formula cleverly incorporates a micro-dose of dextromethorphan hydrobromide (DMX), a common cough suppressant, directly into a fluoride toothpaste base. During brushing, the DMX is absorbed through the oral mucosa, providing localized and sustained cough relief.
“The bioavailability of DMX through sublingual absorption is significantly higher than oral ingestion in some individuals, around 15.5% higher in our internal studies" explained Dr. Humphrey. "This means a lower dose of DMX is needed to achieve the same therapeutic effect, minimizing potential side effects. Our clinical trials showed a 67.8% reduction in nighttime coughing amongst participants using CoughRx-DMX™ compared to the control group using a standard fluoride toothpaste. The average cough frequency decreased from 8.2 episodes per night to just 2.6.”
DextroMed Pharma CEO, Elizabeth Thorne, further elaborated on the product's unique benefits. "We saw a clear unmet need in the market. People are constantly battling coughs, often resorting to sugary syrups or inconvenient pills. CoughRx-DMX™ offers a seamless and convenient solution integrated into an already established daily routine. You're brushing your teeth anyway, why not fight your cough at the same time?"
The toothpaste comes in two flavors: "Arctic Mint Chill" and "Berry Blast Burst," catering to both adult and child preferences. Extensive safety testing, including a Phase III clinical trial involving 1,500 participants, showed no significant adverse effects. A small percentage, approximately 3.2%, reported a mild tingling sensation after brushing, which dissipated within minutes.
Dr. Humphrey emphasized the importance of consulting with a healthcare professional before using CoughRx-DMX™, particularly for individuals with pre-existing medical conditions or those taking other medications. “While the dose of DMX is carefully calibrated for safety and efficacy, it's crucial to ensure it's appropriate for each individual," he stated.
The launch of CoughRx-DMX™ marks a significant milestone for DextroMed Pharma, a company known for its commitment to innovative pharmaceutical solutions. The company anticipates CoughRx-DMX™ will be available in major pharmacies and supermarkets nationwide by the end of June. They are also exploring expanding the product line to include formulations with other active ingredients to address a wider range of oral health and wellness needs. The projected sales for the first year are estimated at $45.7 million, with a forecasted growth rate of 22.3% over the next three years.
The seemingly simple idea of combining cough relief with oral hygiene has the potential to disrupt the market and provide much-needed relief to millions. And it all started with a persistent childhood cough.
